We visited the Ontario Soccer Stadium in Vaughan on Friday night, as Woodbridge travelled just around the corner to take on the first place NDC side. NDC was coming into the game on a 4 game win streak, with wins against Alliance, Simcoe Country Rovers, Vaughan and Oakville Blue Devils coming into this game. Woodbridge was also on a 5 game win streak, as they had beaten North Mississauga 2-0 away and 3-2 at home, Guelph United 2-1 and Alliance 2-0, before losing a cup match to North Toronto last Wednesday.

The first half didn’t see much action early, as both teams came out with a cautious approach, looking to see who would bite first. After a few early chances for both sides, it was Jayda Hilton-Pelaia who got on the end of a interception after her own throwin who shot and scored at the far post with a left footed strike to give Woodbridge the lead in the first half. Both teams would head into the locker rooms with the score at 1-0 for the away side.

NDC rallies in the second half and it pays off huge for them

The second half saw a couple changes for NDC early on and they seemed to pay off as the pace of the game changed significantly. April Lantaigne would take advantage of a Woodbridge mistake to tap in a cross to level the game at 1-1 in the 54th minute and swing momentum back into the game for the home team. However, shortly after, Alexis Campbell pressed her defender to win the ball and whip in a hard cross for Jayda Thompson in the box to give the strikers the lead again!

Both teams exchanged chances and some injuries forced Woodbridge to make changes earlier than they expected. It was getting later into the game when Emma Donnelly would get on the end of a free kick to head home a late equalizer to make it 2-2 in the 88th minute. Then, 5 minutes into stoppage time, it would be April Lantaigne again, breaking Woodbridge hearts with a long shot that the GK just could not keep out to give NDC the 3-2 lead and ultimately the three points.
