We got to cover an incredibly exciting game on Wednesday between the Woodbridge Strikers and Pickering FC, in the League1 Ontario Cup. The weather was great, the conditions were perfect and it was all set for a great match day at the Bridge.
The game started well for the strikers, who started strong and striking first, with Jayda Thompson of UBC putting the Strikers up early in the 9th minute.
From there, it was a back and forth affair, with both teams trading chances and Woodbridge missing a few key chances to secure the game. Unfortunately for the strikers, in the 90th minute, Carolina Grzesniak got on the end of a cross across the box to tap in the equalizer and take the game to a dreaded penalty shootout.
It looked like Pickering had all the momentum going into the shootout, and that was amplified as the GK Hunter Jones, who had subbed in for an injured Hayden Hanley, made a massive save on the first shot. After trading goals back and forth, Pickering had a chance to win the game, and Vanessa Fiore came through with an absolute massive save to keep the cup dream alive for the Strikers.
Doreen Anane Bediakoh scored her penalty to level the score and then once again Vanessa Fiore made an impressive save to deny Alice Kopp and give Taiya Dennehy the chance to win the match for the strikers. Taiya stepped up, made no mistake and the Strikers are through to the next round.
Check out the final PK and celebration below! Congrats to both teams on a great match and we’re looking forward to covering more games in the future!
