We’re taking you back to this past Sunday, where we covered the Woodbridge Strikers taking on the North Toronto Nitros in what was a quality night of footy to wrap up the first weekend of May and matchweek 2.

In the 2PM game, we had the Woodbridge Women’s side taking on a top North Toronto Nitros side. The ladies, coached by head coach Dave Porco, were looking to bounce back from their opening week defeat to FC London.

The game started quick with Kaia Rice scoring early in the 8th minute to put the Nitros up 1-0. From there, Jade Kovacevic made no mistake and made it 2-0 in the 15th, to give the Nitros a great start  in the match. However, with 10 minutes left to play, Samantha Murphy scored what is definitely an early contender for goal of the season, to put Woodbridge within one with a banging right footed volley.

Then, early in the second half, Jayda Thompson made a great darting run and cut the ball back to Murphy who tapped home her second of the game. From there, it was a back and forth match until Jade Kovacevic capitalized on a defensive mistake to put the Nitros up 3-2 with a 6 minutes left of regular time. But Woodbridge did not give up, with the ladies having two more clear chances, but it was not to be. The match ended 3-2 for the Nitros.

On the men’s side, it was quite a different story!

The Strikers came out against the Nitros in what was set to be a contested match from the first minute. A back and forth match, it was not until Exosse Kadiebue subbed in for an injured Anthony Morano that everything changed. With his first touch, Exosse drew a penalty shot which was calmly slotted home by Ronaldo Marshall to give the strikers a 1-0 lead going into the half.

From there, both teams made a few changes and exchanged chances but in the 88th minute, Exosse Kadiebue took his chance and struck home a deflected shot to make the score 2-0 and effectively put the game to bed. The Strikers would win on Matchday 2 and jump back into the top half of the table going into this weekend’s matches.

All in all, an exciting day of footy for all parties involved. Looking forward to covering the Strikers away on Saturday as they take on the Simcoe County Rovers in another double header, this time away from home.
