Disappointment all over as Berlin lets one in with just minutes to go

It was yet another forgettable afternoon for FC Berlin. Coming fresh off the women’s team loss in the earlier game, our men’s team tried to take control as soon as the whistle was blown and generated several chances that could not be exchanged for goals. Some shots were off target, and whenever the ball did go towards the end, Syracuse’s keeper Andrew Taylor controlled the ball without any major issues. The first half ended 0-0 and it felt like it was not right.

The second period wasn’t much different. Berlin was still in control and missed some incredible opportunities through Kavanaugh and Almada, while Syracuse struggled to get the ball near the 18 yards. Just when it was starting to look like this game was headed into a scoreless draw, Berlin was awarded a corner kick, which was taken by Tiago Palhetas. Taylor could deflect the ball but Berlin collected the rebound and Sean Burke tapped the ball in to open the score.

Players and spectators hoped that this goal would act as the proverbial opening of the floodgates and Berlin would start to run up the score, but it was not the case. Just a few minutes later, an inconsequential play in Berlin’s defence led to a bad pass back and striker Landin Tarantino managed to toe punt the ball and make Berlin’s keeper Sanjit Kang’s desperate effort futile. Syracuse was getting a point that they had done nothing to deserve. Unfortunately for Berlin, that 1-1 proved to be the final score.

As they prepare to face FCY New York on Saturday (a Buffalo clásico of sorts), coach Cardillo has the difficult mission of reinstilling some confidence in his players. Berlin will have to work extra hard to end this winningless streak against an always tough opponent.

Sean Burke earned the Player of the Match award at Coyer Field on Sunday.
