It was a hot Father’s Day Sunday at the Grove yesterday afternoon as Woodbridge SC took on Guelph United in an important match for both sides. Woodbridge, coming off a pair of wins against North Mississauga, wanted to continue on their winning ways while hosting Guelph United, who had 2 losses and 1 tie since beating Woodbridge back in May.
The game started off quick, with Sasha Marikano being taken down in the box in the 15th minute, giving Olivia Rizakos a golden opportunity to give Guelph United the lead from the penalty spot, which she did, slotting it bottom corner to put Guelph up 1-0.
The Strikers were definitely not happy and continued to push forward, exchanging chances with the front striker duo of Samantha Murphy and Jayda Thompson causing all sorts of trouble for the Guelph backline.
In the 36th minute, Samantha Murphy slotted a pass to Cat Rogers who was able to get off a quick shot to level the game.
Shortly after, Jayda Thompson found herself on the end of another long though ball and slotted home a volley to give Woodbridge the lead right before the half time break.
The second half saw more of the same, with both teams trading chances but not much action in goal scoring, with both teams making some changes and picking up some yellow cards. However, even with 7 minutes of added time, Guelph was unable to score a second to tie it and the game ended 2-2.
