Vaughan Azzurri 2-4 Woodbridge Strikers: Report – League 1 Women – August 04, 2024

Woodbridge makes the best out of their chances and picks up a great win

A depleted Woodbridge team capitalized on their chances and secured a 4-2 away victory against a Vaughan Azzurri side that perhaps deserved better luck.

The match started well for Woodbridge, with them scoring twice within the first 15 minutes. Jocelyn Hugo Garcia opened the scoring with a stunning free kick, and Martina Pannia doubled the lead with a brilliant long-range shot seven minutes later. Despite Vaughan’s effort, which include hitting the post four times, luck was not on their side. To make matters worse, Jayda Hylton-Pelaia scored just before halftime, leaving Woodbridge with a 3-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Vaughan took control of the game while Woodbridge focused on counterattacks. Vaughan’s opportunities were managed by Woodbridge’s goalkeeper, Sabrina Spano, often in spectacular fashion. The Azzurri’s persistence eventually paid off as Ester Hasantari scored in the 79th minute, and Brianne Desa further reduced the deficit with a superb shot that rendered substitute goalkeeper Angela Volpe’s attempts futile.

The 2-3 scoreline added the drama that spectators were hoping for, but time was running out. A final counterattack by Woodbridge provided them with the assurance they needed. Jessica Lisi, one of the hardest workers on the field, chased down a long ball and scored from a distance after overcoming the goalkeeper’s challenge.

This victory was a feel good one for Woodbridge, marking a strong end to the regular season and setting a positive tone for the approaching postseason.
